1 Samuel chapter 20 tells of Jonathan's assurance to David of Jonathan's loyalty to God's voice over his own father - King Saul. "May the Lord be with you as he used to be with my father." (1 Samuel 20.13)

Jonathan knows how it works when God was on his side. Jonathan is someone who has always trusted the Lord and familiar with God's presence. When he was young, "Jonathan said to his armor bearer. “Perhaps the Lord will help us, for nothing can hinder the Lord. He can win a battle whether he has many warriors or only a few!”" (1 Samuel 14.6) And the two of them won a battle with a Philistine army which triggered the downfall of the rest of the Philistines in the war.

Jonathan knew the familiar presence of the Lord and the Lord was with David. And so went Jonathan.
