Judged more strictly
"Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly."
(James 3.1 NIVUK)
Let us expand on the words "teachers" and "teach" in this verse's context. In the old days, "teaching" happened orally face-to-face or in writing via letters and books. A parent or grandparent instructing the offsprings was a form of teaching. Someone addressing extended families or friends or public was also a form of teaching.
The concept is still the same to this age, although the media has changed.
You and me posting something on the internet can / will be viewed by others. Instantaneously and widely accessible. (Some are viewed more than others.)
In a way, those who post on the internet or work in the broadcasting industry are producing or conducting "teaching", be it intentionally or not. Even if it is just a "personal" blog or journal or short post / tweet. Even if we do not intend to "teach" and do not call ourselves "teachers". The potential effect of what we put out there is what qualifies it as "teaching" or not.
Words can inform and influence. And those who put out their words or views out there for the public to view, regardless of the platform used - I think - "will be judged more strictly".
Lord,
help me to stay true to your truth and love in all of my words.
