Years ago I joined a mission trip to a remote tropical island. We had to fly the "red eye" flight to one of the bigger island. Arriving a little after sunrise, we hopped on a small airplane to fly to a small island.

We were picked up to eat lunch at a local church and then we rode a boat for a few hours to the island where we would do the work. After we landed on the island, we rode at the back of a small truck to drive through unpaved road to the house of our host.

We drove in the black of the night because the island was sparsely populated and the streets were unlighted. But we arrived safely.

I learned that electricity was only available in the evening. And it was primarily for lighting and maybe TV in a few households. No gas line, public running water, etc.

Life was very different from what I was accustomed to. Most of them grew their own basic food crops. For animal protein, they seek in the forest or in the sea, if they do not keep any chicken. If I recall correctly, we ate mostly fish for protein.

People had their problems but they were generally content and they sang a lot and laughed a lot.

Compared to them, I have a lot more. But am I as content as them?
