Rereading yesterday's verses, I am reminded of an aphorism.

Say what you mean and mean what you say.

Elkanah told Hannah that he was happy to have Hannah, although she did not bear any son. And when the Lord blessed Hannah with a son, he agreed with Hannah to give the son up to the Lord.

He did not hold on to the son nor to the blessings that he would get had he kept the son. No, he still valued Hannah like before she gave birth to the son.

Elkannah meant what he said.
