Financial wisdom

Managing finances these days is a bit more complex than in the old days. Historically reputable banks can fail. Save bond investments can drop in value (i.e. its mark-to-market value) catching savers off guard. Stock market will always gyrate and it is increasingly more volatile compared to the old days.

Even if we entrust our savings at a trusted financial advisor to manage it for us, we are the ones who are responsible to decide the parameters for how the advisor ought to manage the savings. At the end, the onus is still on us.

“Good judgment comes from experience, and a lot of that comes from bad judgment.” (Will Rogers)

I hope I can gain as much good judgment as possible from as few bad ones as possible. And may the impact of each bad judgment is not severe.

And more importantly, I hope I will never forget this.

"
And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest. He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’

“Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”’

“But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’

“This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.”
