Selective justification
"
The teachers of the Law and the Pharisees brought in a woman who had been caught committing adultery, and they made her stand before them all.
“Teacher,” they said to Jesus, “this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery. In our Law Moses commanded that such a woman must be stoned to death. Now, what do you say?” They said this to trap Jesus, so that they could accuse him. But he bent over and wrote on the ground with his finger.
As they stood there asking him questions, he straightened himself up and said to them, “Whichever one of you has committed no sin may throw the first stone at her.”
"
(John 7.3-7 GNB)
How did they catch the woman "in the very act"? Have they been watching / spying on her and/or her lover?
And why was she the only one threathened with stoning? Moses' command for stoning was to stone both parties in the adultery (Deuteronomy 22.23-24 GNB).
Even in these days, it is common for society to disapprove or condemn someone while another person is tolerated, although both acted equally. Conservatives, liberals, this denomination, that denomination, this party, that party.
I don't understand how they can justify it. But they do.
I make every intent to not do that. But maybe I myself do it without realising it. Hopefully I am getting better and better.
I wonder what we will find out when we die and stand to account for our words and deeds.
