Test of time
"Now, there are many other things that Jesus did. If they were all written down one by one, I suppose that the whole world could not hold the books that would be written."
(John 21.25 GNB)
I do not mean to be sacrilegious - God knows what is in my heart. But this verse bothers me.
I get it. From the perspective of that time, "books" were very different and so that verse made sense at the time of writing. But God knew the future perfectly well. He knew that as of today, it is possible to store digital books that can cover 33 years worth of biography.
Or hundreds of thousands of hour-long videos that add up to 33 years or more. It would require a large computer data storage, but it is doable.
If God were to write the book himself, would he have put that verse in there? Whether that last sentence was penned by Apostle John or added later by transcribers, God knew that this "personal opinion" would not stand the test of time.
How do I know which is "personal opinion" that will not stand the test of time and which is God's unchanging will?
And what is the implication to my Bible studying?
Lord
please give me the spirit of discernment
as I study your Word
and seek your will
