Governance

"Some time later, as the number of disciples kept growing, there was a quarrel between the Greek-speaking Jews and the native Jews. The Greek-speaking Jews claimed that their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution of funds.

So the twelve apostles called the whole group of believers together and said, “It is not right for us to neglect the preaching of God's word in order to handle finances.

So then, brothers and sisters, choose seven men among you who are known to be full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, and we will put them in charge of this matter. We ourselves, then, will give our full time to prayer and the work of preaching.”

The whole group was pleased with the apostles' proposal ..."

(Acts 6.1-5 GNB)

Money is a necessity of life. It is a tool. But the mishandling of it, or the perception of mishandling, can lead to quarrel and animosity.

The apostles delegated their authority on financial matters to the seven not because it is not important enough for them to handle themselves. It is because they recognised there were talented people in this matter who could do a good job for God. This allowed the apostles to focus on what they were called to do - prayer and preaching.

The right role for the right calling.

Church governance is important. Not because the people cannot be trusted. But because the church ought to choose people who can be trusted to do the right role for the right calling. And to help them do their roles well, so the church can continue to trust them without hesitation.
