At what cost?

"For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul?"

(Matthew 16.26 ESV)

In other words, "cost and benefit".

The verse is quite clear, a benefit of "the whole world" versus the cost of one's "soul". Whether it is worthwhile or not, depends on one's belief and perspective. Many people are fixated on the benefit and downplay the cost, when the cost is actually far greater than assumed and, if too late, cannot be recovered.

Many things in daily life also has cost-benefit. Similarly, it is also easy to fixate on the benefit and downplay the cost.

For example, that new job offers higher salary, so it is better for me to accept the job, right? At what cost? If the work is not something that I delight in and I will spend less time with my family or friends, is it really better? Depends on one's perspective. To some, maybe that is not a concern. To me, I am not so sure.

Or is it worth replacing my current car with that gorgeous new model? Or getting a new pair of high heels? Or getting a new watch? It depends.

The point is, do not just look at the potential benefit, but also assess the cost.
