Wicked and slothful
“For [the kingdom of heaven] will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted to them his property. To one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away.
He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them, and he made five talents more. So also he who had the two talents made two talents more. But he who had received the one talent went and dug in the ground and hid his master's money.”
(Matthew 25.14-18 ESV)
I am purely speculating here, as it is nowhere mentioned in the story. But the way I see it, Jesus was speaking to Jews who understood the Jewish requirements. In the story (verse 26), the master called the servant who hid the money in the ground as "wicked and slothful servant". And if I were an observant Jew of those days, here is what I think.
The third servant was still under the master's employment and he kept receiving his wages. But he did not do his work.
The other two servants who traded and made money, presumably observant Jews, would have given tithe to the Lord out of the trading income. The third servant did not.
God loves me unconditionally. At the same time, he also wants me to get off my ass to do something positive with his love.
