Jealous, bitter, and selfish (4)
"The next Sabbath nearly everyone in the town came to hear the word of the Lord. When the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy; they disputed what Paul was saying and insulted him. But Paul and Barnabas spoke out even more boldly: βIt was necessary that the word of God should be spoken first to you. But since you reject it and do not consider yourselves worthy of eternal life, we will leave you and go to the Gentiles. For this is the commandment that the Lord has given us:
βI have made you a light for the Gentiles, so that all the world may be saved.β β When the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and praised the Lord's message."
(Acts 13.44-48 GNB)
Why were those Jews in Antioch jealous? Were they jealous because they thought the word of God was only for Jews? Were they jealous because Paul and Barnabas ministered the Gentiles? Or were they jealous of the popularity of Paul and Barnabas?
What is it about self-righteous religious types that they think they deserve adorations and special treatments from other people? And from God?
Holiness must not bring about pride. On the contrary, holiness ought to bring about humility. Jesus is humble. A sign of me becoming more like Jesus is the humbler I am becoming.
