My neighbour (2)
In Luke 10, the teacher of the Law asked “what must I do to receive eternal life?” Jesus implied that the priest and the Levite would not receive eternal life, because they did not treat the robbed man as their neighbour.
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: “Love your neighbour as yourself.” All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments. (Matthew 22.37-40 NIV)
There is another story where people did not recognise "their neighbour" and thus did not love their neighbour as themselves. And so they did not receive eternal life.
“Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or ill or in prison, and did not help you?”
‘He will reply, “Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.”
‘Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.’
(Matthew 25.44-46 NIV)
