Share his holiness
"Our human fathers punished us for a short time, as it seemed right to them; but God does it for our own good, so that we may share his holiness. When we are punished, it seems to us at the time something to make us sad, not glad. Later, however, those who have been disciplined by such punishment reap the peaceful reward of a righteous life."
(Hebrews 12.10-11 GNB)
God "punish" or correct me with the intent to separate me from the world and to share his holiness. He does not do it in angry retaliation due to my disobedience.
Disobedience takes me out of holiness which requires a correction from God to put me back in holiness. The intent is never to pain me so I fear disobeying him. The intent is to keep me in his holiness and to "reap the peaceful reward of a righteous life".
And with many iterations of mistakes and corrections, God does not tire. He still loves me despite my failings.
