No elixir
".. as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life."

When Moses was leading the people to Canaan, the people sinned and was bitten by serpents. When the people repented, the only way for them to be healed was to look at a bronze serpent that Moses held up on a pole. (Numbers 21) The people needed to confront their own sins and to have faith that only by obeying can they be saved.
No elixir could cure them. "And if a serpent bit anyone, he would look at the bronze serpent and live." (Numbers 21.9 ESV)
Likewise, all it takes is to believe in Jesus to "have eternal life".
