My interpretation (not dictionary definition): "something-less" means without this "something". So per this interpretation, godlessness is a state of being without God. And to me, this "state of being" can be for any given time (however short or long) and can come and go. Godlessness does not imply "always godless". A person can exhibit godlessness one day and not the next day.
Extending this further, "without God" - in this case - means "without God in charge" or without God in the proper place. And the proper place for him is to be the ruler of my life and my everything.
"Godlessness" is not just about other people doing things "Christians" morally object to. It also applies to me putting my self in the place where only belongs to God.
The times when I am being selfish and put myself before God - these are the times of godlessness. For God is holy and he alone is God. There can be no other.
