Living "without the rest" does not have to mean living an ascetic life. Some individuals are called to live an ascetic life, but most people are not.

The concept of living without the rest applies to every followers of Christ. It is the mindset of choosing between pleasing myself or pleasing God. If all I need is Christ, then does it please God, if I do such and such, or buy such and such?

And let's be real. I do not hear the voice of God whenever I am tempted to buy something in the shop. "No, don't buy that; you already have me!" No, it does not work like that. At least not for me.

I need to consciously ask myself: What is the real purpose of this spending? What is the intended impact?

All I need is Christ. Does my spending habit reflect that?
