Breaking point
John chapter 11 tells the story of Jesus resurrecting Lazarus.
"The sisters sent Jesus a message: “Lord, your dear friend is ill.” ... Yet when he received the news that Lazarus was ill, he stayed where he was for two more days. Then he said to the disciples, “Let us go back to Judea.” ... When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had been buried four days before." (v3,6-7,17 GNB)
Jesus knew. Earlier in v14-15, "Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead, but for your sake I am glad that I was not with him, so that you will believe.”" The travel to Bethany would have taken less than one day. So Lazarus had just died when the sisters sent the news to Jesus.
And they - or possibly Martha - in faith, specifically worded the news that Lazarus was ill. Martha was convinced that if Jesus hurried over, he could have resurrected Lazarus. "Martha said to Jesus, “If you had been here, Lord, my brother would not have died! But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask him for.”" (v21-22 GNB)
But Jesus did not come at once and, agonisingly, the time came to bury Lazarus. With Lazarus in the tomb, she lost all hopes for the miracle. That was her breaking point. But she held on to Jesus!
And Jesus came and lifted up the broken Martha and glorified God through her family. But sometimes, God does not come to do his miracle. And that is the point of faith - to hold on to God even when things do not go the way I want.
When I reach my breaking point, I ought to always remember this. There is no point beyond God's reach. He even resurrected dry bones. (Ezekiel 37)
