Render to God (2)
"Honour the LORD by making him an offering from the best of all that your land produces."
(Proverbs 3.9 GNB)
An offering in Biblical times was done publicly in the Temple. But these days, Christians do not do offering in the same manner. Mostly, offering is a private matter - nobody else sees what I offer. It is between God and me.
To this end, many Christians do not give an offering in the same sense as written in this verse. They do not do it. But one of the meanings for 'honour' is "regard with great respect" or "pay public respect to", which leads to an action.
It does not mean I need to announce to the world what I offer to the LORD. No. But it is important that I do not only honour him in words, but also in deeds. Empty words do not honour him.
And I ought to honour him from the best of what I've gotten. Not the scraps. Everything comes from him and belongs to him in the first place.
