They will know
"Thus says the Lord, “Behold, I am against you and will draw My sword out of its sheath and I will cut off from you both the righteous and the wicked. Because I will cut off from you both the righteous and the wicked, therefore My sword will go from its sheath against all flesh from south to north, and all living will know [without any doubt] that I the Lord have drawn My sword out of its sheath;” .."

God's sword sometimes cuts in fine cuts and sometimes not. When he moves at macro level, both the righteous and the wicked feel the impact.
But God's actions will accomplish his purpose. And his followers caught in his action, no matter how painful it may be, will also accomplish his purpose when they trust his will and obey.
He sees everything and he knows what he is doing.
