Some societies foster stronger culture of honouring their fathers and mothers. It is built into the fabric of their traditions that can be visible when they gather regularly as families. And it is beautiful when the families have come to follow Jesus.

Other societies seem to prioritise other values and place less effort on family gatherings. Still, from my observation, when they become followers of Jesus they adopt fellowship oriented culture that the church encourages.

Maybe God instructs us to "honour your father and mother" specifically to remind us to maintain fellowship with our parents and families and with our extended family in church.

I wonder what it will be like when all Jesus' followers gather together in Heaven. Everyone comes from different cultural backgrounds but ends up as one family. I do not need to wait for that time. I need to make the effort to spend time to fellowship with my family and friends here on earth.
