People adopt choose to follow religion because they want - depending on the belief - to go the "heaven" or want to have a better "next life". Those who do not believe in those kind of things usually choose atheism. And in religion, the religious aspire to have assurance that they can get their objectives and thus they make the effort to comply to the religion's prescriptions on how to live.
They think the extra effort can improve their odds.
Many Christians also think that way. But the Bible is clear on this: without the Cross, no amount of effort will ever be enough. Jesus is the only assurance there is.
When one is not confident in Jesus' sufficiency, he / she will make his / her own effort to compensate it in his / her life. And it shows.
But when I am confident in Jesus' sufficiency - that he is the only assurance I need, I will live according to his words.
