You can do nothing without me
"I am the vine, and you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will bear much fruit; for you can do nothing without me."
(John 15.5 GNB)
This is one claim that is difficult to internalise, because I can literally see that I can do something by myself. Maybe not everything, but surely something? God has created me with some abilities and will power. I can help, God.
At the same time, does that "something" remain in God's plan? Or does it detach me from the vine? It is no good, if I no longer remain united with Jesus.
Left on my own, I will eventually detach from the vine. The only way for me to remain in him, is by emptying my will and obeying only him.
"If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's commands and remain in his love."
(John 15.10 GNB)
Only obedience counts as "something".
