Self-importance

Why do I think: "who do you think I am" or "who do you think you are to treat me like that"?

This kind of self-talk frequently arises from miscommunication and misunderstanding. But implicit in it is my belief that I am an important person and I ought to be "respected".

What does "respect" mean? And what is the basis for this?

Why others ought to respect me first and not the other way around?

"Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too."

(Philippians 2.3-4 NLT)
